Old and the New: Mark Podwal’s Textiles for the Altneuschul in Prague

Yeshiva University Museum

Goal | Chronicle an artist's engagement with a city through the myths, struggles, and identity of its Jewish community.

This exhibition presented the work of famed-artist Mark Podwal and his decade's long fascination with Prague as a muse for his graphic and textile work, and unveiled new ritual textiles commissioned for Prague’s Altneuschul (Old-New Synagogue), the world’s oldest operating synagogue. The 1,500 square foot exhibition explored the architecture of the synagogue and the broader story of Czech-Jewish history. In addition to curating the graphic and textile work, I oversaw gallery design, including working with the artist to create large-scale versions of his drawings on the gallery walls.
